In a shocking development, authorities have arrested the father of one of the victims in connection with the murder of a lesbian couple whose bodies were dumped near Galveston last week. The Houston Chronicle reports:

James Larry Cosby, 46, of Houston, is charged with two counts of tampering with evidence in the deaths of his daughter, Britney Cosby, and Crystal Jackson, according to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office. Both women were 24.

Deputies said Cosby is in the Galveston County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. Charges against him, deputies added, may be upgraded to capital murder as the investigation continues.

Deputies did not release information they believe may link James Cosby to the deaths.

Cosby and Jackson had been together for about two years, and Jackson was the mother of a 5-year-old. A spokesman for the Galveston County sheriff’s office said Tuesday he could not rule out anti-gay bias as a possible motive for the crime. A message left with the sheriff’s office Thursday afternoon wasn’t immediately returned.

According to KTRK, James Cosby had attended a vigil for the two women on Wednesday night in Houston.

“You can’t really put something like this into words,” Cosby said at the vigil.

Authorities are still searching for the couple’s silver 2006 Kia Sorrento.

Anyone with information should call the sheriff’s office at 866-248-8477 or Galveston County Crime Stoppers at 409-763-8477.
