Anti-gay Boy Scouts spinoff also bans Jews, Muslims

TrailLifeThe Dallas Morning News reports today on Trail Life USA, a group formed by Christian conservatives in response to the Boy Scouts of America’s decision earlier this year to lift its ban on gay youth:

Trail Life was born last summer after BSA’s leaders voted to allow openly gay boys to participate in Scouting, a reversal of a long-standing policy. Many conservative Christians objected, saying the historic vote represented a rejection of biblical teachings on sexuality. Some within Scouting voted with their feet, leaving to create Trail Life USA.

In many ways, Trail Life is modeled on the Boy Scouts. The two groups part ways, though, on the question of admitting openly gay members. Trail Life bans gay members — the same ban that the BSA lifted last year.

What the story doesn’t mention is that in addition to gay youth, Trail Life prohibits adult leaders who aren’t Christian, including Jews and Muslims. According to the group’s website, all leaders are required to sign and adhere to this Statement of Faith:

We believe there is One Triune God – God the Father; Jesus Christ, His one and only Son; and the Holy Spirit – Creator of the universe and eternally existent. We believe the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) to be the inspired and authoritative Word of God. We believe each person is created in His image for the purpose of communing with and worshiping God. We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit, Who enables us to live godly lives. We believe each of us is called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We believe God calls us to lives of purity, service, stewardship and integrity.
